- What is Surflight ?

Surflight has been created for the INCA 2010 contest. The theme of this contest is "the 'inclusive society' in the broadest sense: applications that contribute to overcoming exclusion, and improving economic performance, employment opportunities, quality of life, social participation and cohesion".

- How does it work ?

When you browse a website without Surflight, a lot of files are automatically downloaded on your computer. It's why your download amout is high and it's why you have to wait so much until the page is completely loaded.
Surflight decreases websites weight : every heavy data structure like images are automatically removed by Surflight from the website that you try to reach to enhance your connection speed by lowering your download amount.
This is why the design of Surflight is images-less.
Surflight also deletes every javascript objects and every files usually downloaded automatically without your agreement.


- Who uses Surflight ?

If you pay a lot for a very slow internet connection, Surflight will surely help you. If you live in a disadvantaged country, Surflight is made for you !
Surflight fights against the digital divide and supports a more e-inclusive world by providing this tool to excluded people who can't afford a good internet connexion.
This site is intended to help people with low income by making the access to world-wide informations cheaper and faster.
Don't forget that Surflight can also help you if you surf on internet with your Iphone or in cyber cafes or in any other public place through hot spots when you are far away from the wireless transmitter !


- How to use Surflight ?

Do you need a demonstration ? Check this video about Surflight.
Put the link of a regular webpage into the field and click on "surf" (not a .pdf/.doc, ... file but a real webpage).
Read the page. If you like it and if you want to see the initial complete version of the page, click on "Link to the full version of this page".
If you see the tag [IMG], it means that an image found in the website has been deleted by Surflight to speed up you connexion. You can though see the image by clicking on [IMG] if you want.
If you see the tag <IMGLINK>, it means that an image linking to some place has been deleted. Surflight doesn't display the image but you can though visit this place by clicking on <IMGLINK>
If you need the best trade-off between speed, download amount and usability, we recommend you two things : first, don't use Internet Explorer. It slows your navigation ! Use Chrome, Safari, Opera or Firefox. Secondly, if you need to search something, you should use Google without Surflight because Google is really fast, wery light and well optimized unlike other websites. Then, paste any url resulting from your search into Surflight to check if the website is interesting.


- Why don't I see in the lightened page some elements present in the original page ?

Surflight removes almost everything that is not useful to display correctly the text of the page to enhance your connection speed and to shorten pages. If you like the page and that you want to see the full version with everything activated, click on "Link to the full version of this page". So, Surflight helps you to get a very quick idea about the content of a website without downloading every elements.
